Hume City and Bentleigh Greens were unable to convert on goals, which resulted in a 0-0 result, setting up an intense last round battle with Northcote City in order to guarantee a double chance in the finals.

In very windy conditions, and a desperate Bentleigh Greens fighting relegation, Hume City struggled to play the football it has displayed over the past 6 weeks.

No real chance was created until the 27th minute when defender Serdar Pir crossed the ball into the box, only to have the ball cleared away by the Greens’ defence. Finding some momentum against the wind, Cardozo and Vlahos teamed up on the wing at the 29th minute, Cardozo’s great cross into Sumbul in the box fell short and was again cleared by the Greens’ defence.

At the 32nd minute Sumbul flew past his opponent using his explosive speed down the wing and crossed the ball to Vlahos only for the ball once again to be cleared by the defence.

With Richard Cardozo causing headaches for O’Dell’s troops upfront, the skilful midfielder was fouled after he turned two Greens’ defenders inside out. The referee handed out a yellow card to George Stavridis.

The first half ended with both teams unable to break the game open.

The dour contest continued in the second half with Hume City pushing to guarantee its second place.

Mitch Bosevski started the second half with a long distance free kick which went wide of goals at the 50th minute.

Delizzio came close at the 55th minute of the game sending his well timed header wide of goals after a well taken corner by Cardozo.

Greens had its best chance at the 56th minute after Sam Di Vito tested Acevski with no success.

Hume City once again tried the Greens’ goal at the 70th minute after Ross Thompson took an intelligent free kick setting up Delizzio who once again sent the ball over the cross bar for a goal

kick.

With Hume City resorting to set plays to break the deadlock, Delizzio once again came to the forefront at the 82nd minute mark after a corner ball only to send the ball out for another Greens’ goal kick.

With Bentleigh Greens desperately defending it season, Ross Thompson almost sent Bentleigh Greens to 1st division with a scorching free kick only for the ball to go wide of goals. With the referee blowing the whistle, both teams walked off the park with 1 points.

Hume City does battle with Northcote City at John Cain Memorial at 3pm needing a draw to secure a top two spot and a double chance at playing in the grand final of the highest level of competition in Victoria.

Hume battle for top spot as Bentleigh battle relegation.. By Osman Kose PDF Print E-mail

It was a very windy day at the Broadmeadows Valley Park as the Bentleigh Greens made the trip to face second-placed Hume City. It was high stakes for both teams, as Hume City were out to claim top spot heading into the finals, whilst the Bentleigh Greens are battling relegation at the bottom of the table.

The wind had a massive influence on the game as both teams found it difficult to settle and create chances.

In the opening minutes Hume City were playing fast-paced football.

Turhan Sumbul had the first chance to score a goal for the home team, but he was unable to capitalise, as his shot went straight at the Bentleigh goalkeeper, Peter Gavalas.

Once the defenders from both sides got a feel of how the wind would affect the game and speed of the ball, it was hard for of them to be broken down.

The entire first half saw mistakes, scrambles and passes going astray, which left it level going into the break at 0-0.

After the break, it became a battle in the midfield. Craig Smart and Alex Rojas were making attempts to put their team on the front foot.

Meanwhile, Hume City was using the tough tackling of Isyan Erdogan to their benefit as he became very hard to beat.

Sumbul also looked very enthused for the home side in the opening minutes of the second half as he was able to beat several Bentleigh Greens defenders with his power and speed, but was unable to capitalise with his distribution.

The 70th minute saw Sam De Vito find some space inside the box for the Bentleigh Greens. His shot was low and too weak to trouble the captain of the day for Hume City, Lupce Acevski. It was the first real accurate attempt on goal for the Bentleigh Greens.

The home side realised mid-way through the second half that changes needed to be made. Ross Thompson was brought on for midfielder Dusko Delic. Thompson’s affect was immediate as his cross saw defender Fabio Dilizia metres out from goal, only to header just wide. This should have definitely been a goal for Hume City.

Hume made another change on the 80th minute by bringing on young striker Burak Ozdemir for Turhan Sumbul, as injured Vasilios Natsioulas was replaced by Billy Liolios for the Bentleigh Greens.

In the 83rd minute, a cross found Bentleigh’s Damir Lokvancic who controlled and brought the ball down brilliantly. His shot was well hit but was also phenomenally saved by Acevski. A definite goal was kept out by the veteran in goals for Hume.

The chances were few and far between in the closing minutes. The closest was from Richard Cardozo’s corner which almost went in at the back post until Peter Gavalas got a fist to the ball and saw it out for another corner.

A late scramble inside the 18 yard box for Hume City in the dying minutes of the game was once again cleared by Bentleigh in the nick of time, only to come straight back into the box but shot wide by substitute Ozdemir.

The referee called it a day after four minutes of stoppage time, leaving the scores level at 0-0.

The outcome left Hume City in second, whilst the Bentleigh Greens have left it late to get out of the relegation spot, currently down by one point.

Bentleigh Greens will host Northcote City at the Veneto Social Club on Wednesday for their Round 16 catch up game which could be the life line that they were looking for to stay in the Alanic Victorian Premier League.

The final round of the home and away season will see Bentleigh Greens hosting first-placed Richmond at Kingston Health Soccer Complex, and Hume City will travel to John Cain Memorial Park to face Northcote City.

Hume City is in second position on the Alanic Victorian Premier League ladder, after a convincing win over Altona Magic at Paisley Park on Saturday evening.

Hume took out the match 3-nil at Altona’s home ground after Andy Vlahos, Zoran Petrevski and Fabio Dilizia were each able to find the net, bringing down Altona’s defence and strengthening their position as strong finals contenders.

In the 16th minute, Vlahos caught the rebound off a failed goal attempt that hit the post to slot the ball past Tomislav Tomich, to give Hume City an early lead.

Hume’s next scoring opportunity came only minutes later when Altona Magic’s Sime Kovacevic pushed Petrevski in the back just outside the box. The free was taken by Richie Cardozo but was easily saved by Tomich.

Another devastating blow for Altona came in the 29th minute when Tomich lost concentration and came too far out of his goal to even attempt to save a ball that Petrevski had aimed straight into the net, putting Hume City in front, 2-nil.

Altona were not able to catch a break with Doug Mladenovic landing awkwardly on his leg, and coming off the pitch a few minutes later. He was replaced by Aleksander Koltovski.

Hume’s defence was too strong for Altona with them consistently clearing the ball, and finding their way to the front of the pack.

By half time, Hume was dominating, playing for points to try and push Richmond from top spot.

After a text-book header with perfect execution from Philip Riccobene in the 48th minute, Hume had a commanding three-nil lead over Altona Magic.

However, all was not lost for Altona. They upped their offensive pressure in the second half to try and loosen Hume’s firm grip on the match.

Pece Cergovski found his way past the Hume defenders to have a shot on goal that had Lou Acevski’s natural reflexes kicking-in to stop the ball from hitting his head.

After a yellow card for Petrevski for talking back at the umpire, Kovacevic came close to putting Altona on the scoreboard with a header that only just missed the net.

Hume swapped opening goal-scorer and coach, Andy Vlahos for Alfonso Opazo; and Brendan Beni returned to the side, replacing Tansel Baser.

With only seconds remaining, George Papadopoulos found a run on the left wing, crossed the ball into Mathew Theodore for another near-miss for Altona.

Following this victory, Hume City hasn’t lost a match since Round 15, and they are looking like the team to beat in the finals. On the otherside, Altona Magic is languishing 11th spot on the Alanic Victorian Premier League ladder, staring down the barrel of relegation.

Hume City will face the Bentleigh Greens at home next week, while Altona Magic will take on first-placed Richmond at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.
